Rock Throwing Endangers Pittsburgh Drivers
August 23, 2007
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

Windshield damaged by highway rock throwingThis weekend a criminal action on Pittsburgh’s Parkway West claimed another victim. The accident had nothing to do with reckless driving or bad roads. It had everything to do with rock throwing.

It almost sounds like a joke to hear about rock tossing endangering lives on Pennsylvania’s highways. But there’s nothing funny about the injuries the 18-year-old woman received to her skull when a rock flew threw her windshield.

This is the 25th reported incident of rock throwing on the Parkway West this year. People have been hurt by previous rock tossings, but this is the most serious injury to date. It's the first time that a Pittsburgh highway rock throwing has been life threatening. The young lady survived, but she may have a serious brain injury that could create complications for the rest of her life.

I want all Pennsylvania drivers to know about this threat. If you must drive on Pittsburgh’s Parkway West late at night, please do so with caution and care. I hope the individual that caused these horrible rock tossing accidents is found and held responsible for their actions.

Wild Weather Pounds Western Pennsylvania
August 10, 2007

What a storm! Our law offices in Altoona, Ebensburg, Erie, Johnstown and Pittsburgh felt the forceful effects that hit western Pennsylvania. I know many employees, not to mention myself, have flooded basements and property damage waiting for them back at home.

Yesterday, the storm cut off phone and Internet service at our Ebensburg office once in the morning and later in the afternoon. Just down the street from us here in Pittsburgh, the Uptown neighborhood experienced winds strong enough to tear entire pieces off of buildings. I know it wasn’t as devastating as the floods of September 14, 2004, but it was still challenging weather.

It looks like the storm has settled now. Stay safe during the cleanup. Here’s wishing you and yours a dry weekend!

It's That Time Again: Back-to-School
August 09, 2007

I can’t believe it’s August already – it seems like the summer has just flown by. At this point, many children are already preparing for one of the busiest times of year: back-to-school.

For the second year in a row, my law firm is sponsoring a back-to-school webpage with WPXI. It’s full of great information including a weather report for the first day, school preparation suggestions, and of course, back-to-school safety.

This is just one of many webpages we’ve worked on with WPXI to promote safety in our community. Other pages include drunk driving prevention, motorcycle safety, and tips for the prom season.

On my site, we’ve put together a list of important driving safety tips for parents, students, and anyone else on the road during this back-to-school time. Please take a moment to look at these tips. Nothing is worse than seeing a child’s future robbed by a distracted driver.

I wish everyone a safe back-to-school season this year!

Serious Lead Poisoning Risk from Toys
August 07, 2007

Anyone who’s been tuned into the news for the past few days may have seen the story about the huge recall of children’s toys. I myself have preschool age grandchildren, and it’s scary to think that I could be endangering their health by bringing products into my home like these toys containing lead paint.

If you’re not familiar with the effects of lead poisoning on young children, you might be shocked to learn that lead has been linked to developmental disabilities, learning problems, and even brain damage.

With almost one million toys being recalled by Fisher Price for lead paint, many young people may be in serious danger. These toys aren’t the only household products that have been found to contain lead recently – there’s also been lead paint found in Thomas the Tank Engine toy trains, as well as in many common garden hoses.

Companies have a responsibility to make products that don’t endanger our lives, and especially those of our children. Make use of the full list of recalled Fisher-Price toys on my website, and watch out for household products containing lead.

I would also like to invite you to sign up for free e-alert emails over on my website. These periodic alerts contain breaking news to help you ensure that the products, foods, and drugs in your home are helping your family and not hurting them.

Road Construction is an Obstacle Course
August 03, 2007

Getting around Pittsburgh and the rest of the nation this summer is fraught with lots of challenges. Road construction zones are popping up everywhere. The cones, barrels and confusing signs are causing traffic jams, and unfortunately car accidents.

It couldn’t come at a much worse time. I know that many people will be traveling to the beach in August. That means heavier traffic, more congestion, and more gridlock. For those taking long road trips, recent RV recalls have made it even more difficult.

Not only is it tough during the day, but trying to avoid road construction and traffic at night has its own perils. On the Pennsylvania Turnpike alone, 80 percent of July roadwork had projects scheduled for nighttime hours. And driving at night is hard enough as it is.

It’s the responsibility of state municipalities to maintain all roads. That means construction zones, by law, must be safe and drivable at all times of the day and night. Driving hazards can be anywhere this summer, so please be safe and keep your eyes on the road.

Ground Zero Workers Suffer
August 01, 2007

One recent story in the news caught my attention – the brave men and women who went to work to clear the rubble and debris from the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks have never received a dime of the $1 billion in insurance money the government granted them.

The ground zero workers have filed a lawsuit seeking coverage for serious on-the-job injuries, including many who were hurt from breathing the toxic dust created by the buildings’ collapse. Even though a special company was created just to handle these claims, not one injured WTC cleanup worker has been compensated yet under this plan.

At my law firm we see the damage that can be caused by work-related injuries. I’ve seen hardworking men and women hurt on the job that desperately need help to pay for expenses that may have never been a problem if they were not injured while doing their job.

That’s why I was so taken aback to learn that these courageous ground zero workers now have to fight just to get work comp benefits the government already set aside for their needs. On-the-job injuries mean high medical bills, lost wages, and even death. That’s why I sincerely hope these brave men and women are rewarded the fair coverage they deserve.
