Our Law Firm is Passionate About Spreading the "Don't Drink and Drive" Message
May 07, 2008
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

Thank you, Becky, for your comment in response to our recent post on our new television commercials about the dangers of drinking and driving. It is really great to hear that our efforts are making an impact. At our law firm we see the devastating effects of drunk driving and underage drinking all too often. Victims, families, and entire communities suffer from the irresponsible and dangerous decision that some drivers make to drink and drive. This is why it is important to us that we get the "Don't Drink and Drive" message out to the public.

In addition to our commercials, we are involved in a number of community service projects aimed at combating underage drinking and drunk driving. In fact, Road Radio USA, a multimedia program that we sponsor about the dangers of underage drinking, will be presented at Erie-area middle schools and high schools this week.

With the prom season fast approaching, we are proud to partner with Hot 100 in Central PA to offer the Prom Pledge, an opportunity to talk to hundreds of high school students about not drinking on prom night. We have also partnered with WPXI in Pittsburgh to present "Prom Tips" for having a safe, fun, and alcohol-free prom night. High school seniors also have the opportunity to contribute to our efforts through our "Words to be Heard" scholarship contest. Graduating seniors are encouraged to submit essays with ideas on how to prevent drunk driving among their peers.

These events and campaigns are not limited to the spring and summer months. We promote our "Don't Drink and Drive" message year-round, especially around the holidays when people drink more frequently. Additionally, our attorneys are always available to speak to organizations and schools about the tragic impact of drinking and driving.

Thanks again for your comment, Becky. I hope that our "Don't Drink and Drive" message rings true for everyone. Our law firm feels that it is our responsibility to fight the unnecessary pain and devastation caused by alcohol-related accidents.

Announcing the 2008 Words to be Heard Scholarship Contest to Fight Underage Drinking
February 07, 2008

I’m proud to announce that my law firm is current accepting submissions for our 2008 Words to be Heard Scholarship Contest. Due to the success of last year’s debut contest, we’ve expanded our program to award scholarships to five high school seniors in the Erie, Pennsylvania region, as well as five seniors in the Central PA region.

Just like last year, Words to be Heard asks students to think hard about issues such as underage drinking, community involvement, and drinking & driving. The assignment for this year’s contest is:

"Students – write a proposal for a program that would effectively teach pre-teens and teenagers the consequences of underage drinking."

For all the official rules and information – as well as the prize amounts – visit our 2008 Words to be Heard Scholarship Contest webpage. You’ll find all you need to know, as well as contact information to get in touch with us in case you have any questions we didn’t cover.

This scholarship contest isn’t just about providing money to help pay educational costs. It’s also about raising public awareness of the damage caused by underage drinking. High school seniors – send us your submissions before the end of March, and above all, please don’t drink & drive.

Road Radio: On a Mission to Stop Underage Drinking and Driving

One of my passions is getting out the "Don’t Drink and Drive" message. I also am big on preventing underage drinking. Kids experiment with alcohol and drugs so young. That's why my law firm teamed up with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to sponsor Road Radio USA. It's a multi-media assembly that combines music, lights and education in a format that actually reaches teens in Western Pennsylvania. It's an experience you never forget.

Here's a sampling of the comments we've received from middle-school students…

"Going into the auditorium, I thought it was going to be another one of those boring shows the school made us watch… but it wasn’t! To see someone like that with a remarkable story as that one really touched my heart."

"To be honest with you, I was getting ready to go to a party with beer and drink all night. But after I heard what you guys have to say, that changed my life and also you saved my life. I thank you so much for that."

"It inspired me to not even start drinking."

"You definitely made me think about making choices and how it can affect my whole life. It’s hard to imagine one wrong decision and your whole life could be taken away."

Here are a couple of excerpts from letters sent by school principals…

"The message dealing with the dangers and issues of underage drinking was presented in an energetic manner in which students could easily relate…several students and adults told me that they were brought to tears. I felt that this was an extremely effective assembly that delivered an important message in a powerful manner." – Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School

"I observed almost all of the 330 students awestruck with Jim and the awesome program on alcohol prevention and its consequences. My faculty, staff, and students were talking all day about the program in the halls, faculty lounge, and cafeteria." – Rostraver Middle School

The way I see it, if Road Radio prevents just one young person from drinking alcohol, it's all worth it. There's no doubt in my mind that Jimbo, the show's creator and host, will save lives.

Want your students to benefit from Road Radio USA? Parents, teachers, students, school administrators and community leaders interested in this program should contact lrosen@edgarsnyder.com.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: 2007 Pittsburgh Walk for the Cure
September 20, 2007
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

I was proud to attend a wonderful event this past weekend that benefited an incredible cause. The 2007 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) held their annual Walk to Cure Diabetes at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. Flagstaff Hill was packed with people young and old who were excited to help raise money to find a cure for this disease.

It was also a special personal time for me because my grandson has juvenile diabetes. My wife and I sponsored the registration tent at the Walk and we walked with my grandson’s team, Eli’s Eagles. Thank you to my friends, family and colleagues at Edgar Snyder & Associates who walked with us or sponsored us.

My law firm also had their own program that raised over $1,500. One of my partners at the firm has a son with Juvenile Diabetes and he raised money for his son's team, Jacob’s Jewels.

It felt great to be a part of the 4,000-plus people that attended the JDRF Walk, which raised awareness and close to $800,000. I was honored to be a part of the efforts to help find a cure for diabetes. At my law firm, we see how devastating diabetes can be. Not only because we have loved ones and colleagues battling the disease, but because we represent clients who are disabled by diabetes and need Social Security Disability benefits since they are unable to work.

Walk to Find a Cure for Diabetes

Several members of my family and law firm attended yesterday's kick-off luncheon for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk for the Cure. It's a cause that impacts my family personally, as well as several people who work at the law firm.

My grandson has Juvenile Diabetes (JD), and one of my partner's sons is also learning to live with JD. In addition, we have several staff members at the law firm who have diabetes.

The speeches at the luncheon were meaningful and inspiring, as diabetic children and their parents lent their experiences to the audience. My partner, Jason Lichtenstein, and his wife Julie are very active with the JDRF. Julie spoke about her journey as a parent with a young son who has juvenile diabetes, and her son's bravery in coping with JD. The Walk has become a day of celebration for their family and mine.

On Saturday, September 15, we're encouraging our staff to walk with us in Schenley Park or sponsor a walker to raise money to help find a cure for JD. Visit www.jdrf.org to get involved with a great cause.
