Congratulations to Our 2011 Best Lawyers®

Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

I'd like to extend congratulations to my partners Attorneys Todd Berkey, Cynthia Danel, Dennis Liotta, Richard Rosenthal, and Michael Rosenzweig for being chosen to the 2011 Edition of Best Lawyers in America®*. They were selected for this honor after undergoing extensive peer review from lawyers across the nation.

Attorneys Berkey, Danel, Rosenthal, and Rosenzweig were honored for their work in Personal Injury Litigation. Attorney Liotta was honored in the area of Workers' Compensation Law. Attorneys Berkey and Rosenzweig were also honored in the category of Product Liability Litigation.

I've worked with these attorneys for many years, and I'm thrilled to see them deservedly recognized for their accomplishments and dedication to their clients. Congratulations!

Edgar Snyder & Associates Named One of the Best Places to Work in Western PA
August 04, 2010
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

My firm has received great news: we've been chosen as one of the Best Places to Work in western Pennsylvania for the third year in a row. The award is sponsored by the Pittsburgh Business Times, but selection is determined by employee votes. This gives the award a special significance for everyone here, and it fills me with pride to know that our employees think we are a great place to work.

Over 150 western Pennsylvania companies entered, so I'd like to thank everyone at the firm for their participation – you are the ones who make this company such a special place!

What You Say Online Can Affect Your Case
July 28, 2010
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

Social media sites and your caseFacebook now has 500 million users. In April, Twitter announced that it registers 300,000 new users a day. We live in a culture where we can share large amounts of information about ourselves, from the trivial to the important. While this can make keeping in touch with friends and family convenient, it can also have unintended and serious consequences.

When you post information about yourself on social network sites, you open yourself up to scrutiny in ways you may not realize. It’s fairly common for employers to research applicants online, checking their Facebook and MySpace profiles and other social networking activity. Did you know, however, that if you’re injured in an accident, insurance companies and attorneys do the same thing?

Private pages – yours, your friends’, your family members’ – can be subpoenaed, or called into court as evidence.  Even posts that aren’t directly related to your case can be damaging. For example, if an accident is depressed as a result of his injuries but then posts pictures of himself partying and laughing with friends, it can affect his credibility. This can negatively impact settlement or verdict amounts and rulings.

"Never, ever, put anything online about your accident or case,” says my firm’s Investigation Manager, Ken Noble. “Don’t post pictures, don’t share information with your friends. Don’t make the mistake of thinking strict privacy settings are adequate protection, because even a profile picture or your friends’ activity can reveal information.” What’s more, information put online never fully disappears – it’s backed up by hosting companies and can be recovered. And someone can always take a screenshot or snapshot of your page before you get around to deleting it.

Here are key points to keep in mind:

1.    Assume that everything you post is permanent and public.

2.    Limit the information you put online and NEVER post information about your case.

3.    Pay attention to what your friends post since their activity can have an impact on you.

4.    Search your name online and see what comes up. This way you'll see what everyone else is seeing about you.

A few weeks ago I put up a post about the motorcycle events our firm will be participating in this summer. One of them is a partnership at First Niagara Pavilion during their summer concert series. If you're a biker and are going to be at the pavilion, make sure to stop by the motorcycle parking lot to get a free motorcycle kickstand pad and motorcycle resource guide. Here are some photos of the lot and the pad:

First Niagara Bike Lotbike pads

Bikers and non-bikers alike can stop by the Guest Services Booth in the East and West Plazas to sign our designated driver pledge. If you do, you'll get a wristband to receive two free soft drinks.

We look forward to seeing you!

Congratulations to Our 2010 Rising Stars®
June 03, 2010
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

I'd like to say congratulations to my firm's 2010 Pennsylvania Rising Stars®. Attorney Benjamin D. Eberly, Attorney Christopher T. Hildebrandt, Attorney Janine E. McCarty, Attorney Kevin R. Peck, Attorney Erin K. Rudert, and Attorney Christine L. Zaremski-Young have all received this honor, which recognizes them as the best up-and-coming attorneys in the state (only the top 2.5% of eligible lawyers in Pennsylvania are named Rising Stars®!).

The Rising Star® selection process is very similar to the Super Lawyers® process. The main difference is that only attorneys who are 40 years old and younger or attorneys who have been practicing for 10 years or less are eligible. Just like our Super Lawyers®, however, Attorneys Eberly, Hildebrandt, McCarty, Peck, Rudert, and Zaremski-Young were all chosen by their peers as being among the best in their profession.

Congratulations again on this well-deserved honor!

Sharing the Good News…
May 26, 2010
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

I'm proud to share the news that my partners and I have all been named 2010 Pennsylvania Super Lawyers®. This award is particularly meaningful because it's based on the nominations and votes of our peers, so I'd like to say thank you on behalf of myself and Attorney Todd Berkey, Attorney Cynthia Danel, Attorney Jason Lichtenstein, Attorney Dennis Liotta, Attorney Richard Rosenthal, and Attorney Michael Rosenzweig.

I'm also proud that for the third year in a row, Attorneys Danel, Rosenthal, and Rosenzweig have received top 50 distinctions as well. All three were named top 50 attorneys in Pittsburgh, Attorney Danel was honored as one of the top 50 women attorneys in Pennsylvania, and Attorneys Rosenthal and Rosenzweig were named two of the top 100 attorneys in the state.

Here's how the Super Lawyer® honor is awarded: each year, lawyers in Pennsylvania nominate who they think are the best attorneys in the state. Then an attorney-led research staff reviews the nominees and gives points based on evaluation criteria. Finally, a Blue Ribbon panel of attorneys scores the top vote-getters. At the end of the process, only the top five percent of attorneys in the state are named Super Lawyers. If you'd like to learn more, you can check out the Super Lawyer website.

I'm extremely honored that my partners and myself have received this award. Congratulations again to Attorneys Berkey, Danel, Lichtenstein, Liotta, Rosenthal, and Rosenzweig on being named 2010 Super Lawyers®!

I'm pleased to announce that my firm's managing partner, Attorney Richard Rosenthal, will be a presenter at the 28th Annual Auto Law Seminar held by the Pennsylvania Association for Justice. This is the premier auto insurance seminar in the state, so it's a true honor that Attorney Rosenthal was selected as a speaker.

The seminar will be held on April 29 at the Pittsburgh Hilton and will cover a number of topics related to insurance law, including limited tort, first party, and third party coverage issues. Attorney Rosenthal will be speaking about Governmental Liability in Vehicle Accident Cases.

Bank of America Invades Woman's Home During Wrongful Repossession
March 09, 2010
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

Imagine returning home one day to find your locks changed, your home damaged, your utility wires cut, and your pet missing. This is precisely what happened in a case being handled by one of my partners, Attorney Michael Rosenzweig.

Our client, Angela M. Iannelli of Hampton, found a notice on her door announcing that her house had been repossessed by Bank of America. The only problem was that she hadn't defaulted on her mortgage nor had she received any notification that a foreclosure was approaching.

Please check out these links below to find out how this happened and how Bank of America responded – it may surprise you.

Congratulations to Attorney Danel on Her Award from Penn State
November 04, 2009
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

I wanted to say special congratulations to Attorney Cynthia Danel, who has received a special honor from Pennsylvania State University. Attorney Danel, who received her BA and Masters degrees from Penn State, has been named an Alumni Fellow by the university's Alumni Association.

The Alumni Fellow award, Penn State's highest honor, recognizes graduates for their "outstanding professional accomplishments" and is a lifelong title. I'm particularly proud that Cindy received this honor because she has spent the bulk of her career working with me. This isn't the only award that Attorney Danel has received from her alma mater – in 2004, she received the Outstanding Alumni Award. Congratulations, Attorney Danel, on another well-deserved honor!

Congratulations to Edgar on His Recent Honors

Posted by: Sandy

Hi everyone. This is Sandy, Edgar's wife and the Marketing Director of his law firm. I know that Edgar often uses this blog to congratulate others on their accomplishments, but he rarely, if ever, discusses his own. Over the past few months, however, he's received some honors for which I'd like to congratulate him.

In August, Edgar was chosen as one of Penn State's Liberal Arts Centennial Fellows. Penn State says that the fellows' "significant accomplishments have made their communities and their professions better." You can learn more about the award here: Liberal Arts Centennial Fellows

In September, he was honored with the Emanuel Spector Memorial Award, the highest honor presented by the United Jewish Federation, which is given to those who demonstrate exemplary service to the community. You can learn more about the UJF and the Emanuel Spector Award in this article: Snyder, Finkelstein to be honored at UJF Annual Meeting

Finally, last week, the University of Pittsburgh hosted the Edgar M. Snyder Distinguished Visiting Scholar Program. I created this program in 2006 to honor Edgar's decades of service to the legal field. The program allows practitioners and scholars to address topics that are beneficial to Pitt students and faculty. Here's more information on the program: Distinguished Scholar Program

Congratulations, Edgar, on these well-deserved honors – everyone at the firm is very proud of you!

I'd like to say thank you to the members of our Erie office who volunteered at Trail of Treats this past weekend. Held at Millcreek Mall, the event benefits the Achievement Center and the Sarah Reed Children's Center. The children who attended the event were able to celebrate Halloween in a safe, indoor facility, and from what I understand, everyone had a great time. Thanks again to all of our employees who helped make Trail of Treats a success!

He joins three of our other partners, Attorney Cynthia Danel, Attorney Richard Rosenthal, and Attorney Michael Rosenzweig, who are also members of this select group.

According to the Academy, "Members of the Academy represent the most exceptional civil trial lawyers in Allegheny County," and its goal is to "…promote the highest standards of integrity, civility, and competence in the legal profession." I'd like to say congratulations to Attorneys Todd Berkey, Dennis Liotta, Richard Rosenthal, and Michael Rosenzweig, all of whom are partners at my firm. We just received notice that they have been selected for inclusion in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® (Copyright 2008 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, S.C.). This is a special honor because it's based exclusively on peer reviews done by some of the top lawyers in the country. The only way you can be selected is if your peers think you're one of the best at what you do.

Attorneys Berkey, Rosenthal, and Rosenzweig were honored in Best Lawyers'® category of Personal Injury Litigation. Attorneys Berkey and Rosenzweig were also honored in the Product Liability Litigation category, and Attorney Liotta was honored in the Workers' Compensation Law category. Attorneys Berkey and Rosenzweig have been with my law firm for over 20 years and Attorneys Liotta and Rosenthal for almost 20, and I can say that they truly are deserving of this honor.

I have just been informed that our firm has been chosen again this year as one of the Best Places To Work in Pittsburgh. We won't know exactly how we rank in the competition until October, but last year we came in second in our size category, which was a great honor.

The award, which is sponsored by the Pittsburgh Business Times, is a very significant achievement considering there were 150 entries. ESA was selected based on employee surveys, so I take special pride in this award since it is the result of our employees, who do so much to make this firm successful. I'd like to thank everyone for participating and for their acknowledgment of our efforts to make our law firm a great place to work.

The other partners and myself think that this deserves special recognition, so on behalf of all of us I'd like to say congratulations to Edgar on this honor!

This past Sunday, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette ran an article about my wife Sandy and me. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out.

I really enjoyed the article and have been amazed at the number of people who have contacted Sandy and me after reading it. It's good to know that people are still reading the newspaper in an era when too many papers have shut down the presses!

When you read the article you will notice that I mention bringing my partners more into the spotlight with advertising, but don't count me out – I won't be heading off into retirement for years to come!

Happy reading!

Coloring contest winner Pilar Swankler and her familyPittsburgh TV station KDKA filmed a news segment on my firm's holiday card coloring contest winner today. This year's winner is a talented 7-year-old artist who is also a philanthropist – she's using a portion of her winnings to buy a toy for a needy child.

Pilar Swankler's work was picked out of more than 2,200 entries. Her school, Queen of Angels in North Huntingdon, will receive a $1,000 donation and Pilar will receive a $250 shopping spree.

For the past five years, we've held a coloring contest that encourages elementary school students to create a card based on a theme. This year's theme was "My Holiday Wish." Pilar's holiday wish was "A home for every child." In addition to the school donation and the shopping spree, the winning entry is featured on the cover of our holiday greeting card.

So far, her giving spirit has received coverage in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and the McKeesport Daily News. Pictured above left is Pilar and her family as KDKA filmed them, and to the right is her winning entry.

Edgar Snyder & Associates Ranked #2 in Best Places to Work Survey
October 16, 2008
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

Pittsburgh Business Times Best Places to WorkI am proud to announce that Edgar Snyder & Associates has been ranked #2 in the mid-size company category in the Pittsburgh Business Times Best Places to Work survey.

To participate in the survey, employees from companies in western Pennsylvania filled out a questionnaire that rated their jobs on criteria such as management, team work, and feeling valued. Here is what one of our staff members had to say: "Edgar Snyder & Associates is a very special place to work. The supervisors and staff are wonderful. Everyone is always willing to go the extra mile to help each other. I feel very blessed to be part of this organization."

This recognition is particularly meaningful to me because our employees are such talented, dedicated professionals who come to work and give 100% to our clients every day. The success of our firm really depends upon their hard work, and we want to make sure they know that they are appreciated and valued. I am happy to know that our efforts are succeeding and they realize how important they are to the law firm.

Why I Became a Lawyer
July 11, 2008
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

One of the questions that I am asked most often is why I became a lawyer. The answer might surprise some people.

I didn't grow up always wanting to be a lawyer, but my parents emigrated from Russia with 5th grade educations. They always told my siblings and me, "You are going to be a professional. Do you want to become a doctor or a lawyer?" My first semester at Penn State I got a "C" in chemistry, so that eliminated my medical career. But I did have the skills of speaking and debate, and as I got older, I realized that law would be a good fit for me professionally. Also, my mother always told me, "You have a big mouth. Use it to your benefit."

More than 40 years later, I will never regret my decision to become a lawyer. The best part of my job is having helped so many injured victims and their families.

Attorney Cynthia Danel Honored as One of the Top 50 Women Attorneys in the State
June 17, 2008
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

I am very pleased to announce that Attorney Cynthia Danel, a partner at my law firm, has been named one of the top 50 women attorneys in the state of Pennsylvania. She earned this distinction based on the results of the 2008 Super Lawyer selection process and is one of only five Pittsburgh attorneys to receive the honor.

Cindy has been with my law firm since I began my practice in Duquesne, PA 25 years ago. With over 100 employees and legal staff now at the firm, it is hard to believe that it was just Cindy and I back then.  In the past 25 years, I have been continually impressed with how hard Cindy works to understand her clients' needs and give them the representation they deserve. In addition to being a Super Lawyer, Cindy is also a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum and is past president of the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association.

Not only is Cindy an excellent lawyer, she is also an outstanding person. She is involved in the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, and the Pennsylvania State University Career Counseling Panel. She has also served as a judge participant in the Allegheny County High School Moot Court Competition, the University of Pittsburgh Moot Court Competition, and is a former chairperson of the High School Essay Contest run by the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association.

I would like to say congratulations to Cindy on this well-deserved recognition. It has been an honor to work with her for the past 25 years – thank you for all of your hard work inside and outside the courtroom!

Altoona Law Office Makes Holiday Special for Injured Man
September 27, 2007
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

I know it’s not the holiday season yet, but I would like to share an extraordinary tale from our Altoona, Pennsylvania law office. It’s about a time when the entire Altoona team pitched in to help out a man in an extraordinary way.

The client was a seriously injured man with small children to support. But seeing as how first party medical for wage loss doesn’t typically kick in for about 37 days, he was going to spend the Christmas holiday without any gifts for his kids. The insurance company didn’t care about this man or the holiday. To them, he was just another number.

That’s when the whole Altoona office chipped in and made three baskets of food and gifts. They delivered the baskets to his house, leaving them on the front porch. They didn’t sign a card or leave a note that read “from Edgar Snyder & Associates.” They simply said that the baskets were a surprise from Santa.

Soon after, the office received a phone call. It was the injured man. He said, “You’ll never guess what was found on the porch…” Then he started to cry.

The Altoona office was able to touch this man’s life in an exceptional way by working together to go above and beyond the call of duty. Working together, they helped him out because it’s just what they do – finding special ways everyday to make a difference.

Injured Erie Client Awarded Over $1 Million
September 04, 2007
Posted by: Attorney Edgar Snyder

One of the most rewarding parts of being a personal injury attorney is helping someone put their life back together after a serious accident. A partner at my law firm, Attorney Todd Berkey, won a verdict the other day that will help a severely injured worker from Erie, Pennsylvania recover and move forward.

The injured man was using a crane on the job site when a conduit misplaced by the construction company led to his electrocution. He lives with pain, numbness, and swelling in his body from the electrical event.

Attorney Berkey helped this Erie resident fight to get money for his injuries, medical bills, lost wages, and other costs from the accident. A jury agreed that the company was responsible and awarded the worker over $1 million.

If you’ve ever talked with someone who’s been seriously hurt in an accident, then you know that they would trade anything to have their health back again. But sometimes that’s not an option. The next best thing is getting the money to rebuild your life and cover your costs.

I’m proud to say that the lawyers of Edgar Snyder & Associates were able to help this Erie, PA man on his journey into recovery. Congratulations to our client, as well as Attorney Todd Berkey and his team.
